A.B.C. & C.P.R.

Don't wait for this to happen PRACTICE AND REMEMBER!!!

A.B.C (Airway Breathing & Circulation)

Be calm, assess the situation, carry out A.B.C. procedure Airway, Breathing and Circulation your aim is to keep the dog alive until you can get veterinary assistance. make sure the vet is aware of your situation before you arrive.

Check Airway

Loosen the dogs collar or if safe to do so remove it, open the dogs mouth and gently pull the tongue forwards to ensure the airway is open. If there are no obvious injuries to the neck or spine gently extend the neck so that it is in line with the spine to open the airway.

Check Breathing

Once you have opened the aireway you must check the dog is breathing, look for the rise and fall of the chest. If he is not breathing close the dogs mouth and breath slowly and gently into the dogs nose 5 times then check if he is breathing himself, if the chest does not rise check the airway is clear again, and try breathing into his nose again, if there is a blockage in the mouth try and remove it. and repeat the procedure. then check his pulse

Check Circulation

The femoral artery is located on the inside of the thigh where the leg attaches to the torso... Feel for a pulse.

If the dog is still not breathing and has no pulse the final stage is to commence C.P.R

C.P.R (Compression,Pulse & resusitation)

Lie the dog on his right side on a flat surface. take his front leg and bend at the elbow, rotating at the shoulder, At the point where the elbow touches the dogs chest is where you place your hands for the chest compressions (approx. middle of the rib cage) put one hand over the other clasping fingers together, lock your elbows into the straight position, and press down the heel of you hand giving 5 compressions followed by one breath into the nose, and check the pulse, continue for 1 minutes then check for a pulse again, continue compressions until you feel a pulse, continue breathing into the nose until they breath unaided or until you have veterinary assistance.
