Poisoning

Did you know chocolate made for us can poison your dog? Chocolate contains Theobromine which is toxic, it stimulates the nervous system producing restlessness, excitement, tremours which can lead to seizures and coma. Other possible signs include, vomiting, diarrha,rapid breathing, inceased drinking, loss of bladder control and sudden death!

Symptoms reach their peak about 4 hours after poisoning, but can last 18 hours!

100g of sweet chocolate (a bar of Galaxy) or 20g of unsweetened chocolate has caused fatalities.

Symptoms of any poisoning could include breathing difficulties, loss of balance, convulsions, pawing at the mouth, excessive saliva or dribbling from the mouth, collapse.

Consult your vet immediately, tell him what you think your pet has been poisoned with, if possible take the container to the surgery as contents will be listed on the lable making it easier for the vet to treat. Unless advised to do so, do not given anything to your dog to drink (especially milk) as liquids will make it easier for the substance to absorb into the blood stream. Do not make the dog vomit as the influx could burn or abrase his throat and / or mouth.
